Houston Chronicle's Article

" Cleary will be remembered for many things, including his love of black-and-white photos and the gallery bearing his name on Colquitt Street. Over the years the gallery featured portraits of Frida Kahlo and exhibits of vintage prints by masters such as Andre Kertesz,

Cleary also was proud to display the work of landscape and still-life photographer Brett Weston and the New York Photo League, whose members included some of the most famous photographers of the 1930s and 1940s.

Cleary's coveted private collection includes about 1,200 photographs of children, as well thousands more of vintage, original black and white photography.

Among the prized images are a rare vintage photograph of a boy taken by Ansel Adams and Henri Cartier-Bresson's photo of boys running through a hole in a bombed-out wall."

Now, Cleary's only Son Russell has decided to finally share his Father's personal collection with the World Online for viewing and for purchase as well!

John Cleary...The Man, The Myth, The Legend!

Houston Chronicle's Synopsis Of John Cleary

"John Cleary has been many things — card player, real-estate entrepreneur, stockbroker. But when he discovered photography in his early 30s, he began on a path that led to international renown as a premier dealer in photography and rare books.

At first he dealt privately, but when he established his eponymous gallery on Colquitt 30 years ago, he created a rich venue open to students, artists and collectors that is unique in Houston.

Over the years, the gallery has exhibited a range of artists, from newcomers to masters. The subject matter has been dominated by Cleary's preference for classic black-and-white prints. Examples of shows he's presented include portraits of Frida Kahlo, stunning exhibits of vintage prints by masters such as Andre Kertesz, landscapes and still lifes by Brett Weston, and an exhibition focusing on the New York Photo League, which included some of the most noted photographers of the 1930s and 1940s as its members."
